– Two children were found dead under a neighbor’s house Sunday after their mother matter-of-factly told someone helping her move that she had drowned them in a bathtub, authorities said.

30-year-old Sheborah Thomas is in custody and charged with capital murder.

During a probable cause court hearing on Monday, the judge learned that Thomas confessed the killings to police and initially placed their bodies in a garbage bin behind her home. She later went to her workplace on Sunday morning to collect her paycheck but her employer would not issue it that early. When she returned home, she tried to bury the children using only a piece of wood, but instead hid their bodies beneath her neighbor’s home.

Because Thomas was already placed in administrative isolation for her safety, she did not appear in court in person or by teleconference.

“All indications are she is the one who acted alone” in the deaths of her 7-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter, Houston police spokesman Kese Smith said. Thomas allegedly said she drowned the children Friday but authorities have not yet confirmed a cause of death.

Smith said investigators were still interviewing Thomas and had not determined a motive. She was turned into police by an acquaintance who came upon her throwing away trash in a field, where she allegedly told him she needed help moving right away.

When the man asked about her kids, she calmly said she had killed them, Smith said.

“She was so matter of fact about it he didn’t think she was serious. He thought she was joking,” Smith said. “He continued to help her pack.”

Smith said the man eventually realized something was wrong when he asked again and got the same answer. He then drove Thomas toward a nearby police precinct and flagged down an officer, Smith said.

Thomas apparently tried burying the children at first but put them under a neighbor’s house when that proved too difficult, Smith said.

Authorities were not immediately aware of Thomas having any history of mental health problems, Smith said. He said police had been to the home before but for “nothing major.”

The children’s aunt said Sunday if the suspect was having trouble with the children, she should have called family.

“Every single parent might need a break,” said Kita Thomas, the suspect’s sister-in-law who says they’ve helped care for the children in the past. “She would call us, or we would call her hearing she’s having a hard time. We’d call her like, ‘hey, you need a break? we’ll come get the kids we’ll take care of the kids that’s no problem”

In 2001, Houston mother Andrea Yates drowned her five children ranging in age from 7 years to 6 months in the bathtub of her family’s home. She was eventually found not guilty by reason of insanity in July 2006 and sent to a state mental hospital
